Why turbans slip

Most tutorials start with the scarf already in hand. The hold is decided underneath: where the bun sits, what shapes it, and how firmly the cap is closed. Get the prep right and the pins have something firm to hold.

Lesson 1: the prep

  1. Step 1

    A low bun

Set to sit just behind the turban, with any extra length wrapped in.

  2. Step 2

    Set the flyaways

Hairspray, combed straight back, so every hair stays in.

  3. Step 3

    Shape with wadding

Layered over the bun until the shape is smooth.

  4. Step 4

    The under cap

Deep enough to hold every hair, eased on without touching the makeup.

  5. Step 5

    Pinned and closed

Loose hairs tucked in, corners pinned, ready for the scarf.

You might spend some extra time working around your bun to achieve this look, but it will mean you will get the best looking hijab because you've done the right amount of prep.

Lesson 2: the round turban

  1. Step 1

    Anchor the shape

Two pins set the round shape before the first pleat.

  2. Step 2

    Pleat the front

Three pleats. Where you pin sets their size.

The front pleats of the turban in place while Rewa secures the side
  3. Step 3

    Re-anchor each pleat

Pin each one back to the head, then secure the ends.

Rewa pinning a pleat back to the head, the front pleats in place
  4. Step 4

    Finish the back

Pleat, twist and tuck the short side so every corner is tidy.

Smooth, full and beautifully finished.

Rewa's standard for every look. The cap holds all the hair and wadding, so nothing shows at the back or through the scarf.

Pleats take patience. Take your time pinning, and start again when it feels tough.

You grab your material in the direction it wishes to go in. Remember we work with the fabric.
